Garage Door Basics

Not all garage doors are created equal!  Raynor gives you the best in garage door construction, components, and energy efficiency.  Do your homework before you buy.  To help you we've included an overview of Raynor's Residential line and a Homeowners Guide to Garage Doors.

Construction

1-Layer Construction - Pan doors (another name for 1-layer constructed doors) are not insulated. They offer virtually no R-value. Pan doors are a good choice for detached garages or moderate climates with an attached garage. However, insulation can be added to pan doors for minimal R-value and noise suppression.

2-Layer Construction - Polystyrene insulation is bonded between two layers of steel providing a good R-value. These doors are a good choice for harsher climates (both cold and heat) as well as attached garages.

3-Layer Construction -  Polyurethane insulated doors are also a three layer door. However, these doors feature a “foam-in-place” insulation that entirely fills all voids between the two layers of steel. Polyurethane offers the highest R-value available. This is an excellent choice for attached garages, garages that are underneath rooms and harsh climates (both hot and cold). Our Aspen™ polyurethane doors also feature Raynor's proprietary WeatherLock™ section joint and seal system.

Many aesthetic options and design elements are available to tailor these doors to your house for exceptional curb appeal.

Components

Springs -  Raynor doors are balanced by torsion or extension springs. Extension springs are mounted just above the horizontal track, perpendicular to the closed garage door. Torsion springs are mounted above the closed door, parallel and horizontal to the top section of the door. Torsion springs  wind and unwind to provide lifting power, where extension springs get their lifting power by stretching.

Door Sections - Sections are the primary visual part of your door. Raynor offers a variety of exterior door designs. Interior construction ranges from pan doors without insulation to insulated steel sandwich doors.

Track - Heavy gauge steel is used to ensure stability and long life. All Raynor track is made specifically for every door ordered and can be adjusted for a precise fit.

Strong Hinges -  Hinges are made of high-quality steel and bear the weight of the door in the upright (closed) position. On Raynor Premium-level garage doors, hinges are powder coated for maximum protection against moisture and rust.

Quiet Rollers - Raynor uses steel wheel ball-bearing rollers for smoother, quieter operation. Raynor Premium-level garage doors offer nylon rollers with steel ball bearings for superior noise reduction - a plus when living space is used above or in close proximity to the garage.

Weatherseal - To help keep out wind and rain, Raynor garage doors feature a vinyl bottom weatherseal attached to a sturdy aluminum retainer.

Photoelectric Eye - These sensors are mounted five to six inches off the floor on either side of the door. Working in conjunction with the garage door opener, photo eyes send an invisible beam across the door opening. If the beam is broken while the door is operating, the door will reverse direction and return to the open position.

Energy Efficiency

Polyurethane Insulation - State-of-the-art polyurethane insulation is blown between the door's steel skins and expands to fill 100% of the garage door's interior space. This delivers the industry's best insulation efficiency and provides for maximum structural integrity, strength, and soundproofing. Provides R-values from 12.0 - 18.0.

Expanded Polystyrene Insulation - Rigid, lightweight expanded polystyrene insulation provides excellent protection against noise and weather. Provides R-values from 5.0 - 10.25. Available on all Raynor Traditions Series garage doors.

Thermal Break and Air Seal - Thermal break and air seal prevent heat loss from metal-to-metal contact between inside and outside surfaces. Thermal break and air seal is available on MasterpieceShowcase, and Aspen garage doors.

Perimeter Weatherseal - To help keep out wind and rain, all Raynor garage doors feature a vinyl bottom weatherseal attached to a sturdy aluminum retainer.
